16: Organic Metals? The Electrical Conductance of Organic Solids (1966)

Authors

  • Lawrence Ernest Lyons Professor of Physical Chemistry, University of Queensland

Abstract

Liversidge Research Lecture reproduced by permission of the Royal Society of New South Wales from J. Proc. Roy. Soc. N.S.W., 1967-8, 101, 1-9.

"This paper discusses electrical conduction in organic solids, leaving aside the spectral and photo phenomena in which I have been greatly interested for a number of years and omitting also the organic superconductivity recently discussed by Little (1964). Let us ask: How nearly can the electrical conductivity of an organic material be made to approach values typical of metals?"

Author Biography

  • Lawrence Ernest Lyons, Professor of Physical Chemistry, University of Queensland

Not only twice a Liversidge Lecturer, Lawrence Ernest Lyons attended the University of Sydney with a Liversidge Scholarship, graduating BSc (1st class Hons) in 1943. He gave a Liversidge Lecture as part of the ANZAAS series in 1976. He studied UV spectroscopy at University College, London, and later in his career was chairman of the University of Queensland Solar Energy Research Committee and a member of the Solar Energy Research Council. He retired as Emeritus Professor, UQ, in 1987.
